Charity hike raises $90,000 for Down Syndrome Victoria – final push to hit $100K
Kosciuszko National Park, NSW – November 27, 2024
A team of 18 determined hikers have returned from an inspiring trek through Kosciuszko National Park, having raised almost $90,000 for Down Syndrome Victoria. With just a few weeks left, the group is rallying supporters to help them reach their ambitious $100,000 fundraising target by Christmas.
The group, organised through Inspired Adventures and Peak Learning, embarked on the Five Peaks Challenge, trekking 42 kilometres over rugged terrain to support individuals with Down syndrome and families. The hike initially aimed to raise $50,000, but thanks to extraordinary efforts and overwhelming community support, the goal was increased.
Among the trekkers was 76-year-old Michael Mansour, who completed the challenge in honour of Kath, his 42-year-old daughter with Down syndrome. His unwavering dedication inspired others on the challenge and showcased the determination and strength of families advocating for individuals with Down syndrome.
For Dee Milton, a respite carer and one of the participants, the motivation to complete the trek was simple: “If we can, we should.” Her words encapsulate the spirit of the team and the mission to go beyond limits for a worthy cause.
This challenge was about more than just the kilometres we walked,” said Lucy Bain, Communications Manager at Down Syndrome Victoria and the charity representative on the walk. “It was about demonstrating what’s possible when we come together with purpose and determination. The funds raised for DSV will support individuals with Down syndrome and families and help create meaningful opportunities for people with Down syndrome to live the lives they choose.”
Final push to $100,000
Down Syndrome Victoria relies on community donations to provide vital services such as prenatal and new baby support, education services, advocacy, and community connections. Funds raised go toward programs that improve the lives of people with Down syndrome and families right across Victoria.
To help the team cross the finish line and achieve their $100,000 target, donations can be made at the team’s fundraising page: DSV Five Peaks 2024.
“Every donation, big or small, brings us closer to our goal and makes a real difference,” said Down Syndrome Victoria CEO Daniel Payne. “We are deeply grateful to these trekkers and the community for their incredible support.”
