{"id":3711,"date":"2025-10-22T16:53:29","date_gmt":"2025-10-22T05:53:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.downsyndrome.org.au\/national\/?page_id=3711"},"modified":"2025-11-11T15:01:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-11T04:01:12","slug":"learn-and-lead-2025","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.downsyndrome.org.au\/national\/annual-report-2024-25\/learn-and-lead-2025\/","title":{"rendered":"Learn and Lead 2025\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Building skills and confidence in advocacy and providing lived experience advice in health care for people with intellectual disability&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Overview<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Learn and Lead Group (LLG) is a lived experience advisory group for the <a href=\"https:\/\/nceidh.org.au\/who-we-are\/learn-and-lead-group\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health<\/strong><\/a> (or the Centre for short).&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are one of the nine consortium organisations that make up the Centre. As part of our role, we employ the LLG.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group brings together 10 people with intellectual disability from across Australia. They build leadership and advocacy skills and advise the Centre on how to make the healthcare system better for people with intellectual disability. Members contribute to inclusive practices, influence decisions and have their voices heard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Purpose<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The LLG helps members build advocacy and leadership skills while gaining confidence, teamwork and public speaking experience.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group ensures that lived experience directly informs the Centre\u2019s work. Members provide advice on strategy, events and resources, supporting the Centre\u2019s broader goals of improving quality of healthcare, building capacity and leading change in awareness and attitude.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How the project works<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Members meet online every fortnight and take part in workshops and consultations. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activities include:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Exploring inclusion and advocacy&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Developing group rules, values and personal goals&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Creating an Acknowledgement of Country for meetings&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consulting with the Centre\u2019s teams on research, health resources, strategy and conference accessibility&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Taking part in other paid opportunities such as hosting podcasts, chairing webinars, joining committees and presenting at events&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In March 2025, seven members attended a 1.5-day face-to-face meeting in Sydney to build rapport, contribute to the Centres&#8217; three-year strategy and practise public speaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2024\u201325 Highlights<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>10 members actively participating&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Increased confidence, leadership and advocacy skills&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Input into the Centre\u2019s<s>&nbsp;<\/s> strategy, conferences and health projects&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Face-to-face meeting strengthened teamwork and learning&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Three members secured further paid work with DSA beyond the LLG&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Voices from the project<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGiven us the drive to want to be involved in more groups and other opportunities to have our voice heard and that there will be a change in the future to help people with intellectual disability to have good experiences in healthcare\u201d \u2013 Sue, LLG member&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cAs a group we have learnt to build our confidence and skills\u201d \u2013 Tessa, LLG member&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGoing out of my comfort zone and going to a conference in another state, speaking in a workshop. I loved being on the stall at the conference in Adelaide.
