Response to Budget 2018

Down Syndrome Australia supports the announcement in last nights federal budget that full funding for the NDIS is included in the forward estimates.  We are disappointed, however, that this funding has not been quarantined.  People with disabilities and their families expect and demand certainty about the future of the NDIS.  Future funding for the NDIS must be guaranteed and political fights over sourcing funding for NDIS need to come to an end. We are also disappointed that the NDIA is still facing staffing caps which make it difficult for them to deliver on the scheme.

There were a number of positive small initiatives in the budget including continued funding for important Commonwealth disability programs such as  the mobility allowance and Auslan interpreter programs, additional funding for DES providers and transition grants, and NDIS Jobs and Market Fund which is intended to grow the NDIS workforce. Down Syndrome Australia will continue to advocate to Government the need for a more targeted approach to improving employment for people with intellectual disabilities and other initiatives to ensure that people with Down syndrome are supported to fully participate in our community.
