New families

Babies and young children with Down syndrome need what all babies and children need: cuddles, nourishment and love. They will grow, learn and develop, reaching childhood milestones, just like everyone else – at their own rate.

We have a wealth of information to help answer some of the questions and concerns you may be experiencing at this time. We can visit you in your home, at hospital, or you are welcome to visit us.

We also hold workshops, webinars and family events to keep you up-to-date with current information and to provide a supportive community for your family.

Early Years

Family Support

For children with Down syndrome, providing the right supports and interventions during the early years can help build a strong and healthy future.
Each child has different strengths and areas where they may need a bit more support. Your child with Down syndrome WILL learn and master new skills but may need a little more time and support to do so.

Behaviour Concerns and Positive Behaviour Support

Each person with Down syndrome is unique, with their own passions, strengths and challenges. If you’re concerned about the behaviour of your child or adult with Down syndrome at home at school or in the community we can assist you.
If you’re concerned about the behaviour of your child with Down syndrome at home at school or in the community, don’t worry, you are not alone.
We provide training to parents, carers, teaching staff, support workers and professionals in any context on understanding Down syndrome, the causes of challenging behaviours, and positive approaches to managing behaviour.

We can help you by:

  • helping to identify triggers and stressors to behaviour
  • helping to apply appropriate techniques to support that person
  • helping to provide inclusive solutions to ensure behaviour doesn’t prevent that person from being excluded

We put the person with disability at the centre of our approach, providing advice and guidance along the way.
We are NDIA registered for parent/carer training – to find out more about this service contact us.

Library

Access to information is vitally important to our community.  Down Syndrome NSW has a significant collection of resources in the Julie Cromer Library Resource Centre of books, DVDs, journals and information kits.

Social Connections

We provide a broad range of social connections to provide community inclusion opportunities and a supportive environment for families and carers.
UP!Club is a statewide social connection group for adults with Down syndrome.
Up Up & Away is a social group for children with Down syndrome aged 4-17 and their siblings.  Parents and carers get to meet and socialise too.
