We do this by providing individual and family support based on a model of empowerment, being a source of quality information and resources, sharing our knowledge and experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.downsyndrome.org.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/IMG_6529-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"A group of 4 standing at a table.\" class=\"wp-image-2190\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is advocacy?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advocacy contributes to democracy in many important ways; it gives a voice to under or mis-represented citizen&#8217;s interests, mobilises people to participate in the democratic process, assists in the development of better public policy and ensures governments accountability to citizens. Advocacy leads to social change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Advocacy supports<\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Queensland Disability Advocacy Program funds organisations to deliver advocacy services to Queenslanders with disability, their family members and carers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The advocacy services help and support people with disability:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>to understand their rights\u00a0<\/li><li>to navigate the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and other mainstream services\u00a0<\/li><li>in address gaps in support\u00a0<\/li><li>to address discrimination, conflict and unfair treatment\u00a0<\/li><li>to make informed decisions\u00a0<\/li><li>to build capacity to advocate for themselves\u00a0<\/li><li>ensure fundamental needs are met\u00a0<\/li><li>through legal matters\u00a0<\/li><li>with information and referrals to disability support services.\u00a0<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need to access Advocacy
