{"id":1564,"date":"2026-01-27T14:05:17","date_gmt":"2026-01-27T03:05:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.downsyndrome.org.au\/right-to-work\/?p=1564"},"modified":"2026-01-27T14:08:13","modified_gmt":"2026-01-27T03:08:13","slug":"susan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.downsyndrome.org.au\/right-to-work\/2026\/01\/27\/susan\/","title":{"rendered":"Susan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Susan \u201cLeaps\u201d into\u00a0a great\u00a0job!<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Susan\u00a0commenced\u00a0her role as Clinic Assistant at\u00a0an\u00a0occupational\u00a0therapy\u00a0practice\u00a0in\u00a0April 2025.\u00a0The\u00a0paediatric\u00a0occupational and speech therapy clinic\u00a0works\u00a0with children of all neurotypes including autism, ADHD, and learning\/language disabilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Susan says \u201cMy job is a clinic assistant. I work with the speech and occupational therapists, helping them with scanning, tidy and reset session rooms and meet and greet parents and kids\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I tidy and sanitise session rooms after use, vacuum, copying and scanning documents, help therapists create activities for their young clients (cutting and laminating), and meet and greeting the young clients and the parents.\u00a0I even write inspirational song lyrics on the whiteboard just outside of the staff breakroom to motivate\u00a0everyone\u00a0that comes\u00a0through the clinic.\u00a0The\u00a0entire\u00a0team\u00a0here\u00a0are super friendly, supportive, happy people who are easy to talk\u00a0to\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Susan had applied for many paid jobs but\u00a0struggled\u00a0to secure one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:22px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI have been contributing to Vinnies for over three years as a volunteer on\u00a0Sundays, but\u00a0having\u00a0a paid job\u00a0gives me a sense of\u00a0financial\u00a0independence,\u00a0being able to\u00a0pay for my own expenses,\u00a0and being a valuable member of the team\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Susan found the recruitment process and support provided by Down Syndrome Victoria (DSV) helpful, saying \u201cThe support that Down Syndrome Victoria provide me was assisting me with the interview questions which I had to prepare, the calls leading up to the date\u00a0 asking if needed help getting there, during the face to face interview as I do get nervous and sometimes forget what to say, as I had met Bree (from DSV) just before the interview and\u00a0we had a chat to help ease my nerves, and afterwards with following up the results of the interview.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Susan says that \u201chaving this job makes me a happier person\u201d,&nbsp;her employer is equally as happy with having Susan on the team.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0Business Manager\u00a0says \u201cWelcoming Susan into our team as an Office Assistant has been an incredibly rewarding experience\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSusan brings&nbsp;such a&nbsp;positive, hardworking energy to the clinic, and her dedication, attention to detail, and pride in her work have made a meaningful impact on the team and our clients\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeyond her day-to-day contributions, Susan has also enriched our workplace culture, reminding us of the value of inclusion, and celebrating each other&#8217;s strengths\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re grateful to have her as part of the team and look forward to continuing to support her growth and
