When Hunter heard about a Trades Assistant role at Capital SMART Repairs, he was keen to apply. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With support from Down Syndrome International Disability Queensland (DSIDQ), Hunter prepared for the interview by practising questions, updating his resume and reading an Easy Read version of the job description. After the interview, he toured the workplace, met the team and knew it was somewhere he wanted to work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hunter started at Capital SMART in September 2025 and says he enjoys every part of his role. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I work at Capital SMART as a Trades Assistant,” he says. “My jobs include helping unload and put away supplies, washing cars, dismantling old parts and recycling waste.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before Hunter started work, DSIDQ also provided training to Capital SMART about employing someone with Down syndrome and supported both Hunter and the workplace through the onboarding process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having the right support has helped Hunter settle into his role and build his independence. He has a workplace buddy, a daily checklist to guide his tasks and a team that’s always willing to help. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have a work buddy called Dane who helps me if I need it,” says Hunter. “Sometimes people show me how to do a task. I also have a checklist of jobs to do each day that I tick off when I finish them.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capital SMART has also created opportunities for Hunter to keep learning by encouraging him to take on new tasks as his skills and confidence grow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For Hunter, one of the best parts of having a job is feeling like he belongs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am part of the team,” he says. “I have a uniform and my own workstation. Sometimes I go out with everyone from work. I love my job and everyone helps me.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From sharing meal breaks and enjoying food truck days to joining team social activities and work functions, Hunter has become a valued member of the workplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Having a job has also changed Hunter’s life outside work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am more independent now and go out more with my friends and work friends,” he says. “My confidence has grown a lot, and I am better at making friends and talking to people.” <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Hunter says earning his own income has given him more freedom. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I have money so I can go out with my friends in the community and save for things I want to buy.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than anything, he’s proud of what he’s achieved. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I am proud of my job and love showing people what I do at work,” he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead, Hunter wants to continue building on his success. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I want to keep learning new tasks at work. I also want to help other people get a job like I did.” <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Hunter’s story shows the difference the right support and an inclusive workplace can make. With preparation, ongoing support and an employer committed to helping him succeed, Hunter has built confidence, independence and meaningful connections through work. He’s not just doing a job; he’s a valued member of the team. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
