Most of you will be familiar with our annual StepUP! events that we enjoy each October during Down Syndrome Awareness Month. During 2020, COVID-19 made live StepUP! events in many places problematic. As a result, the Down Syndrome Federation launched #21YourWay, a national online component to StepUP!
In 2021 we’re thrilled to announce that we will be combining StepUP! and #21YourWay, with a face-to-face event in Horsham running alongside our online #21YourWay campaign.
While we’re on the topic, though, and before we continue with our festivities, we need to address the elephant in the room: Melbourne. Right up until just a few days ago, we were busy organising two events in Victoria to celebrate Down Syndrome Awareness Month: Horsham and Melbourne. It has become apparent that celebrating our Melbourne event safely and responsibly is incredibly unlikely. Given the event can attract over 1000 people, Down Syndrome Victoria has made the unfortunate decision not to proceed with our Melbourne event this year.
We understand this will be disappointing to many in our community who were looking forward to coming together this October, and we encourage everyone to channel that energy into #21YourWay. Please feel free to reach out to us at DSV with any questions or thoughts.
StepUP! #21YourWay is a national fundraising and awareness campaign which celebrates the significant contributions people with Down syndrome make to our communities and we don’t want the lack of a Melbourne event to distract us from this very important cause.
Let’s keep the vibe positive and focus on what we can do to ensure Down Syndrome Awareness Month 2021 reaches our goal to celebrate, drive awareness and funds for our incredible community. Funds raised will support the Down Syndrome Victoria to continue their work in supporting and empowering people with Down syndrome to have full access to social and economic inclusion, and we think that is a worthy cause no matter what.
So the question is: will you StepUP! for Down syndrome this October? Visit stepupfordownsyndrome.org.au for all the details.
