Thinking about what you do in a typical day, where and who with, helps to begin the planning conversation for emergencies such as a fire. Being prepared for an emergency for someone with Down syndrome is a process that should be reviewed, updated and communicated with others regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Communication<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How does the person with Down syndrome best communicate?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What support do they need for seeing, hearing, speaking and understanding information? (pictures, gestures, Auslan, communication systems?)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Does the person use assistive devices, technologies, tools or services to communicate?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Assistive technology<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What assistive devices, technology or equipment does the person with Down syndrome use?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What power source is needed? Leaving early is the safest option. Do not wait to see if a fire will start, you see smoke or you receive a warning. Leave the night before or early in the morning of days of extreme or catastrophic ratings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Got a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carergateway.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2019-04\/emergency-care-plan.pdf\">Bushfire Survival Plan<\/a> in place?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Planned where you will stay to be safe? Whether that is with some who lives is in a low bushfire risk area, a shopping centre in town or a community centre.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Found out where your closest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfa.vic.gov.au\/plan-prepare\/your-local-area-info-and-advice\/neighbourhood-safer-places\">Bushfire place of last resort<\/a> is? <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Thought about how you will stay aware of the daily fire danger rating?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background:linear-gradient(135deg,rgb(202,248,128) 0%,rgb(157,166,57) 100%)\">Listening to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/local\">ABC local radio<\/a>, monitoring the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.apple.com\/au\/app\/vicemergency\/id356559665\">VicEmergency app<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.vic.gov.au\/respond\/\">website<\/a>, or a friend, neighbour, support worker or carer could help you know what the daily fire danger rating is and put your fire plan into action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What to take with you<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:33px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Personal items &#8211; phone and portable charger, money, keys, identification, glasses, hearing aids, jewellery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Essential items \u2013 mobility aids, communication aids, assistive technology devices and chargers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Medical equipment such as CPAP machine, medications and prescriptions, first aid kit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Important documents \u2013 your Will, insurance papers, USB stick with important files and scanned photos, or ensuring they are saved in the cloud<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Overnight bag with change of clothes, toiletries, sanitary supplies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bottled water and some food<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pure wool blanket, battery powered radio, torch and spare batteries<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Protective clothing such as long pants, long sleeved shirts and sturdy shoes. Visuals can enhance understanding and provide a concrete reference.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Develop a social story about your fire plan and what to do if you are at risk of a fire.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice your fire plan and run through packing the car. Consider your exits and practice driving them, using familiar landmarks to help solidify an understanding of the plan.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Practice regularly to help build confidence and preparedness.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seek assistance from your allied health professional such as a speech therapist to develop social stories and visuals about the fire plan.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div
