Sharing knowledge to improve healthcare for people with intellectual disability
Overview
Down Syndrome Australia (DSA) leads the production of educational webinars and podcasts for the National Centre of Excellence in Intellectual Disability Health (the Centre).
People with intellectual disability face ongoing health inequities. Many healthcare professionals lack the knowledge or experience to provide the care they need. This project brings together people with lived experience with health professionals and researchers to create content that builds understanding and improves practice when treating people with intellectual disability.
To develop content, we consult widely. This includes the Centre’s consortium organisations, DSA Health Ambassadors, the Learn and Lead Group and individual lived experience consultations.
Webinars
In FY24/25 we delivered three webinars aimed primarily at healthcare professionals:
- The power of together: Improving the health of people with intellectual disability – Hosted in December 2024 in collaboration with GeneEQUAL
- Insights and opportunities: Using the NDDA to improve health care for people with intellectual disability – Hosted in March 2025 with speakers from the Centre, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), Inclusion Australia and the National Disability Data Asset (NDDA)
- Better access: Improving healthcare for people with intellectual disability – Webinar hosted in June 2025 to showcase the Centre’s Preventive Health Project
Podcast
We also launched the Excellence in Practice: Voices for Better Care podcast.
Hosts and disability advocates Ricky Kremer and Raylene Griffiths speak with experts, healthcare professionals and people with lived experience. Each episode shares real stories and practical advice to help healthcare professionals build skills, increase understanding and improve practice when working with people with intellectual disability.
In FY25 we released three episodes:
