I’m so happy to share highlights from Down Syndrome Victoria’s StepUP! event, which took place on 19 October. The day was filled with laughter and a true sense of unity. Families, friends and supporters from all over came together to walk, celebrate and raise vital funds for DSV. StepUP! is more than just a walk, it’s a symbol of inclusion and empowerment. The 3.5 kilometre walk represented our shared commitment to building a more understanding and supportive community. Seeing everyone step up together was deeply moving.

“Families coming together, encouraging everyone to go for the walk, it’s empowering,” said Sushmitta, a DSV volunteer of four years. “It’s an honour to see the effort everyone puts in. The combination of factors, love, energy and purpose makes it so special.”

The atmosphere was full of energy. There was dancing, live music, exercise sessions with Brad, games like Guess Who, jump rope and plenty of fun activities for everyone, including face painting by the talented Miles. “I’m good at face painting,” Miles shared, “I’ve practiced on kids’ faces at events like McHappy Day in the past, and this one is wonderful. It’s great to share my skills for such a good cause.”

Local food stalls kept everyone smiling and full and, yes, even the sausages and coffee were amazing! As I went around interviewing people, I could feel the genuine joy of connection. Everyone was happy to be part of something meaningful and proud to share their stories.

StepUP! also brought together wonderful community partners and supporters. Virginia from the NDIA spoke about why she loves coming to events like this, “It’s a great way to meet people in the community, participants and prospective participants, and to spread the word about what’s happening in the NDIS. It’s all about connection and inclusion.”

Aaron from Victoria Police shared his enthusiasm for being involved. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us to engage positively with the community,” he said. “We want people to know we’re approachable and here to help. I always walk away from events like this with such a high, it’s a fantastic day.”

Their presence highlighted how StepUP! unites people from all walks of life. The event was a wonderful reminder that inclusion doesn’t just happen, it’s something we build together.Fundraisers like StepUP! are essential for DSV. The money raised helps fund advocacy programs, job opportunities and community initiatives that empower people with Down syndrome and their families.

Dan, DSV’s CEO, spoke about why ongoing participation is so important. “Events like StepUP! allow us to continue advocating for people with Down syndrome, ensuring they have opportunities to thrive in every area of life.”

Chris from Sophie Stars summed it up beautifully: “I love meeting people like you Colby and connecting with friends and family in the DSV community. It’s such a joy.”

That joy was everywhere you looked in the smiles, laughter and sense of pride that filled the air. The event represented overcoming barriers and celebrating everyone’s unique abilities. I’m proud to have been part of it, speaking with so many kind and inspiring people, and seeing firsthand what community looks like when everyone steps up together. Together, we walked not just for awareness, but for a brighter, more inclusive future.

Thank you to all who contributed to making StepUP! such a success, surrounded by such a wonderful community. Keep sharing the love!
