Down Syndrome Victoria has worked with our community, partners and health professionals to develop new resources about dementia and ageing well.
We’re excited to launch our new dementia webpage, bringing together practical information, training and resources designed specifically for people with Down syndrome, families, carers and health professionals.
As part of this project, we have developed two new resources, Ageing Well Starts Young: Resistance and Resilience to Dementia and Pathways to Care: Down Syndrome and Dementia, providing practical guidance on brain health, recognising changes, accessing specialist services and navigating the dementia journey with confidence.
Over the past year, we have also developed and delivered tailored training for adults with Down syndrome, families and carers, and health professionals, helping to build knowledge, confidence and understanding of ageing and dementia across our community. The resources and training were co-designed with people with Down syndrome, families and health professionals to ensure they are relevant, accessible and practical.
Project partners
One of the most valuable outcomes of this project has been the strong partnerships established with Dementia Australia, Monash Memory Clinic, the Centre for Developmental Disability Health and other health services. Together, we have improved referral pathways, strengthened professional knowledge, and enhanced support options for adults with Down syndrome experiencing dementia.
We extend our sincere thanks to the Department of Social Services for funding this important initiative. We also want to recognise Zoe Shearer, DSV’s Building Knowledge Project Manager, for her work and dedication in bringing this project to life, as well as Dr Madeline Healy for her contributions and guidance, and our project partners.
What’s next
While the project has now concluded, the resources, training, networks and partnerships created will continue to benefit our community well into the future. We look forward to building on this strong foundation with Dementia Australia and sharing new specialist supports and resources that we will develop together in 2027.
