While we support sensible changes that strengthen the NDIS, we do not support a number of the proposed changes currently before Parliament.
In our submission, we raised concerns about:
- proposed cuts to funding that helps people take part in their communities, maintain employment and stay connected to others
- proposed powers that could allow funding for some supports to be capped too low, making it harder for people to access the supports they need
- changes that would place more pressure on families and carers, many of whom are already providing significant support and feeling stretched
- a proposed requirement to access all available treatment to meet NDIS eligibility, which should not apply to people with Down syndrome who require lifelong support.
We are also concerned that these changes move away from looking at the whole person. Disability, health, support needs and life circumstances all affect each other, but we do not think the legislation properly reflects that.
We do not support these changes in their current form and will continue advocating on behalf of our community.
Have your say
Although submissions to Government have now closed, there are still ways to have your say.
You can:
- contact your local MP or Senator
- sign the Protect the NDIS petition
- share your experiences or concerns with our Advocacy team at advocacy@downsyndrome.org.au
Sharing your story can help decision-makers understand the real impact these changes could have on people with disability and families.
Our friends at Inclusion Australia have also shared Easy Read information to help people understand the proposed changes.
