Hear Me Out: Finding Your Voice Through Debate Course in Sunshine Coast
About the 3-Day Program
Want to build confidence, share your ideas and connect with others from the comfort of home?
Using debate as a fun and engaging platform, participants explore different topics, choose a side, share their ideas and listen to different opinions. Along the way, they practice speaking, listening, thinking and working together.
Across the program, you will:
– Share your ideas and opinions
– Practice speaking in front of others
– Learn to give reasons for what you think
– Listen and respond to different ideas
– Work as a team and support other participants
– Build confidence in using your voice
No debate experience is needed. The program is about having a go, discovering what you can do and becoming more confident in sharing your ideas.
The program was co-designed with people with intellectual disability and is delivered by DSIDQ staff and Peer Mentors in a safe, supportive and fun environment.
Hear Me Out provides people with intellectual disability with opportunities to build confidence, practice communication and strengthen self-advocacy in a fun and supportive environment. Through debate, participants have a clear reason to speak, share ideas, listen to different perspectives, give reasons for their opinions and practice expressing themselves in front of others.
The program also creates opportunities for connection, teamwork and leadership. Participants encourage and celebrate each other, develop confidence through repeated practice, and often begin to take greater pride in their ability to contribute. The combination of structure, fun, peer support and genuine opportunities to be heard helps participants build skills that can extend beyond the program into everyday conversations, relationships, work and community life.
