There’s more to know
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. It is a chance to celebrate people with Down syndrome, raise awareness and hear directly from our community.
This year, DSA will be sharing stories and videos around the theme There’s more to know.
There is always more to know about a person. Their knowledge, skills, experiences, interests and contributions all form part of who they are. Throughout October, people from across our lived experience teams will share their knowledge, advice and everyday lives.

How to share your story
Throughout October, we’re inviting you to share your knowledge, skills, interests and experiences. You can choose one of these ideas to help you get started.
People with Down syndrome, what do you want others to know about you?
Ask me about…
Use Ask me about… to share something you know or advice from your own experience.
For example:
- Ask me about my job and what I do there.
- Ask me about what inclusion means to me.
- Ask me about a hobby or interest I know a lot about.
- Ask me about a skill I have learned.
Think about:
- What experience or knowledge do you have?
- What advice or tips can you share?
- What do you want other people to understand?

Let me show you…
Use Let me show you… to share something you do, enjoy or feel proud of. For example:
- Let me show you what I do at work.
- Let me show you how I cook dinner for my family.
- Let me show you how I train for my sport.
- Let me show you how I advocate and lead.
- Let me show you something I have achieved.
Talk about what you do, why you enjoy it and how it makes a difference in your life. This option works well if you already have photos of yourself doing the activity.
You could also ask someone to take some photos or record a few short video clips. Write a few words to go with your photos or talk about the activity in your video.
Choose how you want to share
You could:
- record a short video talking to the camera
- share a short, unedited video of yourself doing something
- share a photo or series of photos and write about them
- share a quote with a photo.
You do not need special equipment or video editing skills.
If you make a video:
- keep it between 30 and 60 seconds
- focus on one topic
- hold your phone upright
- record somewhere quiet
- make sure your face is easy to see
- speak clearly and use your own words.
You can ask someone you trust to help you plan, film or post your story.
If you are supporting someone to take part, help them share what they want others to know. The ideas and words should be theirs.
When you share
Please:
- post on your favourite social media platform
- use #MoreToKnowDSA
- tag Down Syndrome Australia
- make sure you have permission from anyone else in your photos or video
- check that no private information can be seen.
If your post is public, tagging Down Syndrome Australia will help us find it. We may share community posts throughout October.
There’s more to know about everyone. What would you like people to know about you?
