World Down Syndrome Congress 2024: A Week to Remember
July 31, 2024
Down Syndrome Australia was thrilled to host the World Down Syndrome Congress 2024 in Brisbane from July 9-12. Nearly 1,000 people from over 45 countries came together for an unforgettable week of learning, connecting, celebrating and driving positive change for our community.
Prior to Congress, over 120 people with Down syndrome attended the Self-Advocates Day. Together the group determined five key themes for action, that were reported to the whole of Congress. These themes are:
- independence – being able to express yourself and make your own decisions;
- advocacy leadership – being listened to and growing confidence to speak for yourself;
- mental health and emotional wellbeing – recognising physical, mental and emotional health all matter, including being part of a community;
- friends and relationships – acknowledging the power of close relationships and their value;
- respect for individuals and ending abuse in family settings.
Congress kicked off with a vibrant opening ceremony, featuring a Welcome to Country dance performance, an international flag ceremony, and speeches from Minister Rishworth, Bridget Snedden (President of DS International), our Congress Committee Co-chairs, DSA’s Board Chair, and other special guests.
Over 200 speakers, including experts, self-advocates and families, explored key topics like Health, Education, Advocacy, Family Life and Personal Development. The sessions combined practical advice with heartfelt personal stories.
Dance and music performances were a standout, with everything from classical ballet and contemporary dance to the lively “Together Red” choir. Jerry Ritchter-Nguyen wowed us with his martial arts and magic tricks, and Raji Renshaw’s brilliant short film offered a unique look into his life. Charlotte Woodward from the US shared her inspiring story from the heart, showcasing the incredible capabilities of people with Down syndrome.
Medical leaders shared the latest on biology and neuroscience, offered tips for improving sleep, and discussed how inclusive research can make a real difference.
Personal stories were at the heart of Congress, with speakers sharing their experiences with employment, relationships, having a voice and realising their goals. We also paid tribute to Sir Robert Martin, a pioneering activist for people with disability from New Zealand who sadly passed away earlier this year.
Social events added to the excitement of the week. We had a fantastic meet and greet for people with Down syndrome, a lively Welcome Reception with a marketplace of talented small business owners with Down syndrome, a film night, and the Congress Gala Dinner. The Gala featured a celebration of the Together We Can leadership scholars, live music and the best dance floor we’ve ever seen!
The biggest highlight was meeting friends, both old and new, from around the world. The atmosphere at Congress was fantastic and the energy was incredible.
Here’s what some attendees had to say:
