Meet Ollie and Helen, two big fans of Club21 Teens

Meet Ollie and Helen, two big fans of Club21 Teens thumbnail.

Club21 Teens is all about creating friendships, doing fun activities together and building independence.

Ollie is one of our participants and he has truly embraced everything Club21 Teens has to offer, and his journey is a great example of why the program is so special.

While Ollie has always been independent, sociable and confident, Club21 Teens provides valuable experiences that continue to expand his awareness. Navigating transport, experiencing busy venues and attending new events all contribute to his confidence in engaging with the wider world.

A parent’s perspective

Club21 Teens means a lot to Ollie’s mum Helen too.

Helen told us that Ollie loves the variety of events and the chance to socialise independently at Club21 Teens. Without a parent or carer, he gets to explore the world on his own terms while meeting new people and reconnecting with friends. And, as Helen added, “He also adores the programs facilitator Brad!”

For Helen, one of the best parts of Club21 Teens is knowing that Ollie, an only child, has the chance to meet up with others and enjoy new experiences. “I think it’s fantastic that he can do this without me, and my hope is that he develops some meaningful relationships along the way.”

Without a doubt, Ollie’s Club21 Teens highlight so far has been attending the Australian Open. Helen admitted she wasn’t sure if he would enjoy it, but it turned out to be an incredible experience. “The atmosphere, the tennis itself – he absolutely loved it! I feel this will be an enduring interest, and I’m grateful to DSV for providing him with such a wonderful opportunity.”

Helen recommends Club21 Teens to other families. “I would love to see more children and families involved. Being part of the wider community, meeting new people and having fun is so important for young people. It’s what neurotypical teens do, so why should it be any different for someone with Down syndrome?”

A bright year ahead

We are thrilled to hear how much Ollie and his family value Club21 Teens, and we’re looking forward to many more exciting events this year, including a fun night out at the Michael Jackson tribute concert in May!

A huge thank you to Ollie and Helen for sharing their journey with us. Stories like theirs highlight the power of community, friendship and independence that Club21 Teens fosters. We can’t wait to continue creating more unforgettable experiences together!
