We’re thrilled to share a monthly update from the Down Syndrome Advisory Network (DSAN) – a national group of people with Down syndrome who meet fortnightly to build their skills and share their views. This month, we hear from Sandon.
Hi, My name is Sandon Overton and I am from the Down Syndrome Advisory Network.
I live in Somerset, Tasmania.
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends.
I like going for a bike ride, playing my guitar and listening to music.
I like going on holidays and enjoy making movies.
What I enjoy about the DSAN meetings is spending time with my new friends and meeting other people.
Erin is the Down Syndrome Advisory’s Advocacy and Policy Manager, and she came and spoke to us about the NDIS.
What I learnt from Erin is the NDIS is available to everyone who has Down Syndrome, and that NDIS help fund people to come and help make my life easier. This help can cost a lot of money.
What I find confusing is getting a lot of information all at one time, so I don’t always remember everything that is said.
With NDIS there are a lot of people involved and I find this very confusing too.
Alison did some training with us on Human Rights.
Some of my human rights are that I have the right to set my own barriers and goals of what I can achieve.
I also have the right to live independently and to enjoy a happy and healthy life.
I learnt that I am in charge of my life and how I choose to live it.
For Disability Pride Month I worked on a video with 3 other DSAN members.
I said I was super proud of being a good friend especially to Rhylie and Sam.
I am proud of the person I am, of the people who support and love me,
and I am proud of always trying my best, including playing my guitar.
What I like about doing the video was a huge success and I loved sharing with other people those who are important to me.
Thanks for listening.
This is Sandon Overton signing off for now.
