Gemma Namey joins Down Syndrome Australia board

Down Syndrome Australia is thrilled to announce the appointment of Gemma Namey to the board of Down Syndrome Australia. 

Gemma’s experience as a lawyer focuses on human rights, with a particular focus on the rights of people with disabilities. She has held a variety of senior positions in the NSW Government, including at the Crown Solicitor’s Office, and in the community sector at the Public Interest Advocacy Centre and the Intellectual Disability Rights Service. Her experience has spanned government, not-for-profit, commercial and international law including advising on High Court matters and representing clients in the Federal Court of Australia.

Gemma currently serves as a senior lawyer advising the Cabinet Office in the NSW Government. Previously, she has also worked directly with clients with intellectual disability, including people with Down syndrome. 

Gemma is the mother of two delightful young girls, the eldest has Down syndrome. She has also been active in the Down syndrome community, having previously served as a director of the Down Syndrome Association of NSW.  

Dr Rebecca Kelly, Chair of the Down Syndrome Australia board, welcomed Gemma’s appointment to the board:

Her insights will be critical to supporting our advocacy and strategy so that DSA can effectively contribute to creating change that reflect the rights of people with disabilities.”
