Down Syndrome Australia (DSA) has been confirmed by the Federal Government as a national Disability Representative Organisation (DRO), leading a new consortium.
As of July 1, Down Syndrome Australia will be one of eleven National Disability Representative Organisations. In addition to representing people with Down syndrome, DSA will also be representing all people with an intellectual disability who have chromosomal variations.
“I warmly welcome the Federal Government’s recognition of Down Syndrome Australia as a Disability Representative Organisation. This is an important recognition of our work, and the critical role we play in representing people with Down syndrome and other chromosomal variations” said Dr Rebecca Kelly, Chair of Down Syndrome Australia.
National Disability Representative Organisations are chosen through a competitive grant process and engage directly with Federal Government Ministers and Departments, to deliver systemic advocacy and advice. DRO’s support Government through promoting understanding and elevating issues, of people with disability, as well as undertaking initiatives to foster inclusion of people with disability in all aspects of community life.
“This is an exciting announcement. I’m really happy that the hard work of Down Syndrome Australia has been recognised” said Claire Mitchell, Down Syndrome Australia Board Director and self-advocate.
“This announcement will ensure that the Down syndrome community is well-represented at the national level. DSA is also excited to work with organisations that represent people with chromosomal variations. Together, we can continue our advocacy to the Federal Government and ensure positive outcomes for our communities” said Darryl Steff, CEO of Down Syndrome Australia.
