Urgent changes needed to Australia’s Migration Health Requirement

31 July, 2024

Last night’s powerful story on The Project showed just how urgently we need to change Australia’s outdated and unfair Migration Health Requirement that stops many people with disability, and their families, from coming to Australia.

Now that the Home Affairs review findings are out, it’s time for the new Immigration Minister, Tony Burke MP, to set a clear timeline for these much-needed reforms. Families like Luca’s deserve better!

It’s disappointing that there’s still no clear plan or timeline to fix the problems with current migration laws, which hurt people with disability and health conditions. Australia’s migration health rules need to match community expectations, what other democracies are doing and our UN human rights commitments.

We’re committed to fighting the ongoing discrimination faced by people with disability or health issues who want to move to Australia. That’s why, since 2020, we’ve joined forces with Australian Lawyers for Human Rights to lead the Welcoming Disability campaign.
