Strengthening communities through Regional Connections

At Down Syndrome Victoria, we know that strong, connected communities make a meaningful difference in the lives of people with Down syndrome and their families. Our Regional Connections project aims to create opportunities for families to connect, share experiences and learn from each other, while deepening our understanding of the unique needs and challenges of regional communities across Victoria.

By spending time in local areas and hearing directly from families, we ensure our services, supports and advocacy reflect the realities of regional life. This project isn’t just about connection, it’s about strengthening voices and creating spaces where families and people with Down syndrome feel seen, supported and empowered.

Wrapping up 2025

In November, we wrapped up our Regional Connections activities for 2025 with visits to Warrnambool and Geelong.

DSV CEO Daniel Payne travelled to Warrnambool to meet families and hear directly from the local community. The afternoon tea brought together new families and those with older children, creating a warm, welcoming space for sharing stories, advice and support. Families exchanged experiences, offered encouragement to newcomers, and strengthened the local network of peer support.

In Geelong, we partnered with the Geelong Regional Network to host the launch of their first community activity as part of the Freemasons Geelong Connection Project. Held at Geelong Adventure Golf, participants enjoyed a free game of mini golf and morning tea. With over 80 people attending, families formed new friendships, shared experiences and celebrated the start of what promises to be a year full of fun family Geelong activities in 2026.

Looking ahead and more information

In the new year, plans are underway to bring regional network leaders from eight locations together, aimed at increasing collaboration, shared learning and deepening their understanding of DSV services, helping to strengthen referral pathways and support for families across Victoria.

Our next scheduled event is another Geelong family day on Sunday 18 January, and this time we are going ten pin bowling. You can find out more and register at our events page.
