Employment Connections: Patrick

When Patrick walked into his first paid role at the Royal Flying Doctor Service in November 2025, he brought more than enthusiasm, he brought a sense of joy that would soon ripple through the entire workplace.

From day one, Patrick became a valued member of the team.

“I work with Sally. I work at Royal Flying Doctor Service and I work with my buddies,” he says proudly.

Each day, Patrick takes care of essential office tasks: stocking the photocopier with paper, checking the milk and coffee pods, and making sure the biscuit supply is always topped up. He approaches every job with care and consistency, knowing his work helps everyone else do theirs.

“My favourite thing I do is the office footy tipping and computer work,” he adds, highlighting how much he enjoys being part of both the social and practical sides of office life.

Sally, Patrick’s supervisor, has seen firsthand the positive impact he’s had on the team.

“I love having Pat as a colleague. Everyone here loves having Pat as a colleague. We have lots of fun and do lots of work,” she says.

The workplace has embraced a supportive and inclusive culture, ensuring Patrick always feels confident and connected.

“When I’m not here or in a meeting, Pat has some ‘buddies’ he can go to if he needs help,” Sally explains.

Patrick has a way of bringing fun and laughter into everyday life at the office. “Recently on St Patrick’s Day, Pat arrived to work in a green hat. That was great!” Sally recalls.

For the Royal Flying Doctor Service team, the experience of inclusive hiring has been overwhelmingly positive.

“I found the process of hiring a person through Down Syndrome Victoria to be great! Bree’s support and knowledge was excellent. The awareness training was invaluable and Bree’s support on-site with Pat during the first few weeks was really helpful,” Sally shared.

Her message to other organisations is simple and enthusiastic: “I would highly recommend other organisations to get on board.”

For Patrick, this job represents independence, purpose, and a future he’s excited about.

“I wanted to get a job so I could work and get money so I can be independent. I am saving my money to go on holiday to the Gold Coast and theme parks,” he said.

And above all else, it brings him happiness. “I feel happy and excited about my job. I like having a job because I love working and meeting new people.”

Patrick’s story is a great reminder of what’s possible when opportunity meets support. It’s not just about employment, it’s about belonging, confidence, and creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.
