Employment Connections in action: Matthew

Employment Connections in action: Matthew thumbnail.

Matthew began an exciting new chapter when he secured a role with Smartwares in Cranbourne West through DSV’s Employment Connections program.

He quickly became a valued member of the warehouse team, and has been building skills, confidence, friendships and independence.

Matthew works in the warehouse, where he enjoys a variety of tasks. “I do a bit of everything,” Matthew says. “I go on the ride-on pallet trolleys, help with orders and de-boxing.”

While Smartwares had no misconceptions about employing a person with Down syndrome, they immediately appreciated Matthew’s abilities and what he’s brought to the team. “His beautiful personality stood out straight away,” says his supervisor, Lauren. “We are impressed by Matthew’s initiative and skill level. His confidence has grown and he is completely independent with all his tasks.”

Everyone wins

For Matthew, gaining paid employment was an important step towards achieving greater independence and building security. “I want to start making money for the future and I like having something to do. It’s more enjoyable than sitting on the couch. I love it! And I love catching public transport to work. It makes me feel independent,” he explains.

One of Matthew’s favourite parts of working at Smartwares is the people he works alongside, saying, “Everyone is cool and super friendly.”

Matthew’s contribution to the workplace extends beyond the work he does each day. Smartwares shared the meaningful impact Matthew has on those around him: “He’s brought beautiful energy, light, laughter and positivity. Everyone loves seeing him and there’s a noticeable shift in the team’s mood when he’s working.”

When asked to describe Matthew in three words, the team’s response was simple: funny, caring and intelligent.

The recruitment process was also a positive experience for Smartwares. The team found the support provided by Down Syndrome Victoria invaluable, particularly during Matthew’s transition into the workplace. “It was brilliant and such an easy process. The support Matthew received on the job at the beginning was great, and the Down syndrome awareness training before he started was brilliant. It was so nice to get some background and feel more confident about Matthew joining the team.”

For Matthew, having a job has brought many benefits. “I like having something to do, I make money, and I’ve made new friends,” he says.

His story highlights the powerful impact of inclusive employment. Through meaningful work, Matthew has gained confidence, independence and new opportunities, while Smartwares has welcomed a dedicated employee whose presence enriches the workplace.

For employers considering hiring a person with Down syndrome, Smartwares has a clear message: “Do it! Without hesitation.”
