This workshop is for families of children with Down syndrome aged 4-5 years who are starting prep in 2023.

About the event

Join Down Syndrome Victoria’s Education Support and Family Support teams for an informal discussion about practical steps you can take to help prepare your child to start school. Also hear about the experiences of a parent whose child started school recently and what they learned.

This workshop is for families of children with Down syndrome aged 4-5 years who are starting prep in 2023.

Participants will:

  • Have the opportunity to share experiences and strategies
  • Discuss practical examples to support school readiness

Presenters

Kate Rogers, parent and teacher

Kate is an experienced primary school teacher, who has spent most of her career teaching the Early Years at a mainstream school. She has a 7-year-old son with Down syndrome who is about to complete Grade 1 in a mainstream, government school.

Ensuring a smooth transition to school for children has always been a priority for Kate, and this presentation will provide hints and tips to help you support your child through this process.

Sonia Bonadio

Sonia Bonadio, Family Support Manager, DSV

Sonia is a social worker and a parent of a child with Down syndrome. She has worked with services in the disability sector, mental health and community based prenatal services. In 2016 Sonia worked as a MyTime Facilitator for DSV and thoroughly enjoyed her time facilitating the group, providing her with a great opportunity to gain understanding and knowledge in many areas relating to families who have or who are caring for children who have Down syndrome.

Paula Kilgallon

Paula Kilgallon, Education Manager, DSV

Paula is an experienced teacher who has worked in primary schools in both Australia and overseas. She also has experience teaching socially disadvantaged children with Berry Street. Paula has post graduate qualifications in Psychology, having completed a Graduate Diploma in Psychology and a Graduate Diploma in Professional Psychology with Monash University. Paula joined the Education Support Team in January 2019, and is committed to helping students achieve their goals.
