New parent guides and resources
Our information guides and fact sheets can help to support new parents and families. All of our guides are available in the Resource Hub.
A Guide for New Parents
A Guide for New Parents is a resource designed specifically for parents and families with a new baby who has been diagnosed with Down syndrome. This booklet will help you understand what Down syndrome is and what it might be like to have a child with Down syndrome. It includes stories from families around Australia and contains the latest information.
A Guide for New Parents (FAQ)
The New Parent Guide (FAQ) is a shorter version of the New Parent resource available above. It includes frequently asked questions to help provide parents with the information they may need.
Early Years Guide
The Early Years Guide provides information for parents about early intervention, development and supports in the early years. There is information about the NDIS and accessing services through the Early Childhood Early Intervention approach.
You can find more information for new parents in our Resource Hub.
Families often find talking to other parents of a child with Down syndrome helpful. Peer support groups provide a great opportunity to get together with other families, share ideas and experiences and meet new friends.
There are a number of closed Facebook groups and social media pages and groups to connect with other parents and families and carers that may be linked to your local Down syndrome association.
You can find out more about these through your local Down syndrome association.
Support and information from your local Down syndrome association
You can get in touch with your local Down syndrome organisation to find out more about support for parents and families.
The State and Territory Down syndrome associations provide support, information and links to other local families. Personal visits to families at home or in metropolitan hospitals are often also available.
New parent information packs can be provided to all new families and your local Down syndrome association will let you know about the next ‘Welcome’ event in your area. Please ensure you contact your local association to let them know you have a new baby.
