DSV’s Education Program, an update

DSV’s Education Program, an update thumbnail.

It has been a busy start to the year in our Education Program.

Last month DSV were asked to provide a two-day professional development program to South Australian teachers and parents. Day one of the program entitled Unlocking Potential: Including a student with Down syndrome in your school, was geared to educators. DSV Education Managers, Paula Kilgallon and Ro O’Dwyer, presented to a large and enthusiastic audience of teachers and support staff.

Presentations were designed to help educators to:
  • Gain a comprehensive understanding of what inclusion is and the principles that underpin inclusive education
  • Learn practical strategies and tools for teaching students with Down syndrome
  • Discover ways to foster positive behaviour and a supportive learning environment
  • Explore ways to adjust the curriculum and provide accommodations for students with Down syndrome

The next day a smaller but passionate group of parents came along to the event, Unlocking potential: Embracing inclusion in your child’s education.

Paula and Ro used their presentations to unpack:
  • Navigating the school years – exploring best practices and effective strategies during your child’s education journey
  • Equipping yourself with advocacy tools and strategies to champion your child’s right to an inclusive education
  • Exploring the characteristics of an inclusive school and why inclusion is important

It was great to connect with educators and parents in South Australia and to work with Down Syndrome Western Australia to deliver the inclusive education workshops.
