Down Syndrome Australia Launches Right to Work Campaign

21 March 2025

Down Syndrome Australia is excited to launch the Right to Work campaign this week.

In just the past 18 months, we’ve partnered with state and territory members to help place over 80 people with Down syndrome into jobs with fair wages. We’ve seen firsthand that with the right support, people with Down syndrome can thrive in the workplace. But too often, they’re held back by barriers that need to be removed.

Currently, many people with Down syndrome are legally paid as little as $3 an hour. This needs to change. No one should work every day and earn less than the cost of a cup of coffee per hour.

That’s why we launched the Right to Work campaign. Here’s what we’re asking the Government to do:

  1. Phase out the $3 wage
  2. Fund programs that work
  3. Make the Disability Support Pension work for workers

It’s time to build a future where everyone is paid fairly and given the chance to thrive in meaningful work.
