Sophie has always been involved in the sporting community. She has swum since she was 5 years old, joined the Special Olympics when she was 9, and up until recently played basketball. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, many of the physical activities and groups she was involved with had to stop. As a way to keep fit and connected to the community, her mum Robyn suggested she take up personal training.

Story by Sophie Kildea

My work was being closed so I’d been going to the gym since my work closed. It’s going well.

A young woman with Down Syndrome has a bar with heavy weights on her shoulders.

Mum told me. She said go to the gym because you’re sitting down all day. So, I said yes.

It was a good idea because I could get more fit.

The first time was outdoors. I did burpees and running and squats. I also do weights.

My trainer is Michelle. She’s nice and she’s kind. She’s very friendly.

She works with me harder.

I raised money for #21YourWay. Mum gave me the idea.

I was happy.

I raised nearly $3500.

I might do it next year too.
