News from our Regional Family Networks
with Linda Jungwirth, DSV Regional Family Network Coordinator

Geelong

On behalf of DSV, I would like to sincerely thank Jo Montano and Sarah Klein for their support of the Down Syndrome Geelong group over many years.

They have each helped DSV connect with the Geelong group, coordinated StepUP! events and have been a great point of contact for us. Their volunteer efforts have seen Geelong host local catch-up days for the Down syndrome community as well.

Regional Groups such as this provide a place for people to connect with peers and find support. Thank you for all you have done.

The group will not remain rudderless, with Julie Penfold kindly agreeing to be a point of contact for DSV. I look forward to working with Julie to ensure we understand the needs of our Geelong community. Please let Julie or myself know if you would like to join her in helping coordinate the group.

Bendigo

The Bendigo Down syndrome group recently enjoyed a lunch for parents. There, it was identified that many members were interested in either drama or dance activities, however they weren’t sure where to start. As the Regional Family Network Coordinator, I will work with the group to establish their children in mainstream classes where possible. There’ll be more news as we work our way forward.

The Bendigo Down Syndrome Group will be gathering on 14 December at the Rifle Hotel. If you would like to join, please find the relevant post on the Bendigo Down Syndrome Group Facebook page and leave a comment.

The FitSkills pilot program is also coming to Bendigo. Learn more here!

Warrnambool

We will be delivering a workshop event for the Warrnambool and District Down Syndrome Support Group.

The information will relate to independence and workshops will be held both for people with Down syndrome and for family members. The date will be moved to approximately March 2023 to accommodate the availability of some of our Advisory Network members. We hope to see many of you attend this local opportunity.

Ballarat

Of course, you’ll have heard the exciting news that Ballarat now has their own Club21. You can learn more about this peer support network and how to join here.

It’s wonderful to report so much news for regional Victoria.

Please get in touch on 9486 9600 or at lindaj@dsav.asn.au if you have an idea or need for your regional area. I’d be happy to help your group.

A sincere thank you to the Bank of Melbourne for funding DSV’s Regional Family Network project.
