The Inclusive Unit Planning Workshop for Educators, hosted by the Down Syndrome Queensland Education Team, is designed for educators who are teaching or supporting learners with Down syndrome and/or another intellectual disability. Participants in this practical workshop will work through a step-by-step process of writing an inclusive unit. First, we will explore why and how we can be inclusive of the diverse learners in our classrooms. Then we will apply Quality Differentiated Teaching Practice for all learners (drawing on Universal Design for Learning and Differentiation), and plan individual adjustments for learners with Down syndrome and/or another intellectual disability. The aim is to increase participation and learning, and decrease teacher workload, by creating one unit for the whole class, rather than writing separate units/lessons for learners with disability.
This workshop is suitable for P-12 classroom teachers, HOSES, Inclusion teachers, Learning Support teachers, and curriculum leaders. Participants will be required to bring along a laptop/tablet and a unit plan to work on during the workshop (either a draft of a new unit plan, or an existing unit plan to revise). Workshop participants will leave with a new unit plan, aligned with the Australian Curriculum, that enables learners with Down syndrome and/or another intellectual disability to be learning the age-appropriate curriculum unit “on the same basis” as their peers, supported by reasonable adjustments.
The workshop will be run by Dr Carly Lassig (DSQ’s Lead Education Consultant and Senior Lecturer at Queensland University of Technology), and the DSQ Education Team, who have extensive and varied teaching experience in mainstream and special schools.
