Ian Cook was awarded DSV Life Membership for his fierce advocacy for inclusion of students with Down syndrome in mainstream schools over many years, providing parents with support and advice to navigate the education system and collaborate effectively with schools. These efforts were recognised in 2013 when the Down Syndrome Inclusion Support Service was awarded the National Disability Award for Excellence in Improving Education Outcomes, a testament to Ian’s vision and impact.
Ian’s impact
Ian supported students with Down syndrome around Victoria and inspired their teachers and families for many years. He joined Down Syndrome Victoria in 2007, having previously worked at EPIC, an early intervention service created by parents. Ian travelled all over Victoria to visit mainstream schools to support students with Down syndrome. During this time, he developed wonderful and lasting relationships with families and schools.
Ian was instrumental in building an exhaustive library of resources, many of which are still used today. He developed resources on a range of topics, including transitioning to primary and secondary school, which are still key components of the Education Support Service today. He also recognised the importance of delivering professional development, establishing the annual Down Syndrome Victoria Education Conference, which has provided an important forum for teachers to learn from experts in the field of intellectual disability in education.
