FitSkills21 for volunteers

“I think that having access and opportunities to fitness is really important, so the FitSkills program stood out as something that would support that … It’s the highlight of my week.” — David, FitSkills21 volunteer

FitSkills21 is a program that helps people with Down syndrome access gyms by increasing their confidence in going to the gym by providing them with a volunteer partner. Volunteers and participants attend the gym together once a week, followed by a meal with the FitSkills21 group.

The program runs to school terms and does not run during school holiday periods.

What are the benefits for volunteers?

  • Make a contribution to the community.
  • Learn more about people with disability.
  • Combine exercise with doing something good.
  • Support someone to achieve their goals.
  • Opportunities to socialise and meet new people.

What commitment is required?

As a volunteer you would be matched with an adult with Down syndrome. You support them by attending the FitSkills21 session each week, working out together and helping them stay motivated to attend. The program requires a commitment of the following:

  • completing onboarding and training requirements
  • going to the gym with your partner once a week during school terms, followed by a meal with the FitSkills21 group
  • supporting your partner in their FitSkills21 journey
  • liaising with a physiotherapist during the assessment appointments.

How do I find out more and get involved?

You can find more information about FitSkills21 on the main program page, including the session locations and times, as well as what people with Down syndrome get out of the program.

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please fill in this registration form or RSVP to one of our upcoming volunteer information sessions. Alternatively, you can email Johanne, the Volunteer Coordinator, on volunteer@dsav.asn.au and she will get back to you with more information.
