A free do-it-yourself guide to building your skills in independent travel!

The Travel Training manual provides structured training, tools and resources for a person with an intellectual disability to work through to develop the skills and confidence for solo travel.

About the Travel Training

DSQ’s Travel Training manual provides a structured training process for a person with an intellectual disability to work through, with the support of a ‘travel coach’ of their choice. The travel coach may be a parent, carer, friend, or support worker.

The manual provides all the tools and guidance the coach needs to facilitate a training tailored to the traveller’s skill level, from beginner to advanced. It contains homework activities and assessment tools that are designed to be written on/filled in while you are on the go – whether it’s by train, bus, ferry or taxi. If you would prefer to complete the travel training activities on a device, we can provide you with an interactive pdf of the assessment tools and homework activities.

The guide provides a range of resources for all parties involved:

  • Travel diary

For the coach

  • Route planning
  • Coaching strategies
